Welcome aboard!
I'm in the SE corner of the state. We get plenty cold here too. I tend to layer well in cold weather. If I get too warm I can take something off but its darned hard to add clothes to get warm when you aren't where the clothes are. I have a travel and first aid kit for the vehicle that goes along no matter how far we are traveling along with some blankets and plenty of water. In the deer woods I make sure I have a lot of water bottles, high energy snack foods and an extra, dry, pair of socks and gloves. Of course, knowing where the guns shoot in cold weather goes without saying and having adequate number of extra rounds plus three for the 3 shot call for help.
With today's high-tech clothing a person can be out in the cold for quite a while, comfortably, safely, but one still should have first aid basics down pat and also know the warning signs of hypothermia and over-exertion.
