Road Trip with a Gun

I'm planning a trip to visit family and trying to figure out the best route. I'd like to bring my firearm along, but going through New York State complicates things. Avoiding NY adds a ton of driving time, and I'm caught between convenience and legality. Has anyone dealt with this situation before? I'd really appreciate hearing what you decided to do, or if you found any alternative routes that worked.

We are headed out to Gettysburg next Spring, so I've been looking into it. We won't be going through NY, but Illinois and Maryland are also pretty restrictive. At this point, I think I'm going to leave the pistol at home and carry pepper spray. Having to keep the gun unloaded and locked in the trunk makes it pretty useless in most situations I can envision.
