Getting Started on My First AR Build

I've been thinking about building my first AR-15 for a while now, and I've finally started looking at parts. Feels overwhelming, honestly. There are so many options out there! I’ve had good luck finding some decent deals if I poke around a bit, but I still feel like I’m trying to decipher a whole new language when it comes to what’s actually worth buying.

I’m planning for a simple rifle build to start. Leaning towards 5.56 since that’s what I hear most people recommend, but I’m open to suggestions if anyone thinks there’s a better route for a newbie like me. Maybe .300 Blackout or something?

I’d love to hear about any brands you guys would steer clear of. Are there parts that are just junk? Also, what about those pesky hidden costs? I can imagine there’s more to it than just the parts, right? Every time I think I’ve got it figured out, I remember the little things, like tools or maybe even that fancy trigger I read about.

And honestly, is it worth building my own, or should I just buy one that’s already put together? I’d rather not waste my time or money making rookie mistakes.

Thanks for any advice! I’m all ears for tips — especially things you learned the hard way when you started. I could really use all the help I can get here.

Don't overthink it. Just start with a simple setup and test it. You'll quickly figure out what upgrades really matter to you. For me, that trigger can wait for now. The mil-spec one will do just fine to get you going.

When it comes to parts, I can't stress enough how important it is to invest in a good barrel and bolt carrier group. Think of those as the heart of your rifle. You don’t have to go all out but remember to avoid those ultra-cheap, unknown brands. Sure, they might seem like a steal, but you could end up with something that works inconsistently, and that’s the last thing you want when it comes to reliability.

Too bad Del-Ton went out of business, the best of the low-priced brands to build. Theres a few cheapies out there, I would consider a name brand complete rifle from Ruger or similar unless you really want to build one.
