I've been thinking about taking my little one out to fish for the first time, but I have no experience myself. I saw some basic kids' fishing rods at a local store and figured that might be a good start. What's your go-to setup for simple outings like this? I want to keep it fun and easy since my kid is only 5. Any tips on bait or locations would be super helpful. Just trying to create some fun memories!

It has been a long time since I had a 5 year old, but DO NOT give a 5 year old a sharp hook with a barb...
Use a plastic practice casting plug on a Hot Wheels, Barbie type kids fishing rod..
Like any ....adventure.... with a young one, take plenty of snacks, other diversions and such...
Mostly enjoy being out with them..

Sunfish are about the easiest fish to learn on. Find a body of water with LOTS of sunfish close to shore. Size won't matter. Keep everything simple so your child doesn't get frustrated, or you too for that matter. Don't stay too long: depending on the child [and you know your child better than anyone], when his/her attention span begins to wander from fishing it is time to pack it and go.

The water and woods are wonderful places full of interesting things to hold our touch or just watch. If fishing is slow, find something along the water to check out to keep the child's focus on the natural elements around you and talk about what they are and what they do in that environment. Kids love to learn and when you toss fishing in to boot you can turn a slow hour long trip into a fun one.
