I've been thinking about getting a shotgun for home defense and could use some input from those who've had experience with it. I'm stuck between a 12-gauge and a 20-gauge. I know the 12-gauge packs a punch, but I've heard the 20-gauge is easier on the shoulder, especially in tight spaces. What do you think?

When it comes to barrel length and features, what's important for home defense? I'm looking for something straightforward that won't jam up under stress. And do you have specific models or brands that you trust? I'm all for reliability.

Lastly, how crucial is training with a shotgun? I've shot them casually, but I know that's not the same as being prepared. What should I be practicing?

Um.... NOT going to go there with any kind of ...this or that.. advise..

However, one bit of trivia I learned many years ago while teaching Firearms Safety classes.. We used to have a bit of open range time after the manditory class range time.. It seemed even for smaller, unexperienced shooters light 12ga loads were easier for them to handle than most 20ga options.. This as 20ga seems loaded hotter to compete with 12ga..
My 5 cents of experience..

I'm tempted to get a Berreta A300 Ultimate Patrol. Its more expensive brother (the 1301) is also tempting, but the reviews I've read look like it doesn't really add much over the A300 other than cosmetics. But I'm dealing with a shoulder tear, so long guns that thump me are a problem right now.

Brief answer:
A gas operated 20 gauge is going to have the lowest recoil; The shortest barrel (Down to 18" minimum) is also desirable.
Any 20 0r 12 gauge, with the proper defensive load, will have far more stopping power than any real world defensive handgun.
Of all the subjects involving defensive firearm use, the choice of firearm is among the least important, compared to the training of the user.
All the aspects of defensive firearm use, in the home or not, tactical and legal, is a subject of multiple books, not just a few pages.
Specifically on the use of a defense shotgun, Massad Ayoob's "Stressfire II, Advanced Combat Shotgun" is one place to start.
But, I would start with Ayoob's: "Deadly Force; Understanding your right to Self Defense", and go from there.
