Thinking about selling an AR to a close family friend, and I could really use some advice on the best way to go about it. Can we just fill out the paperwork ourselves, or do we need to go through an FFL? I'd really appreciate any tips you have on this.

Since this is a close family friend, it might be worth considering the transfer through an FFL. The fee is usually between $20 and $50, but it could save you a lot of hassle down the road.

Federal law actually allows that, as long as your family friend is legally allowed to own a firearm. But if he/she lives out of state, you’ll need to go through an FFL dealer. Just a little extra step to keep things on the right side of the law.

I’d really suggest putting together a simple bill of sale that includes both your names, addresses, a description of the AR, its serial number, and the date. Just have both of you sign it and keep a couple of copies. It'll give you some peace of mind if anything comes up later on.
